The green-cleaning aisle has exploded in the last five years. Some of it is good. Some of it is a glossy bottle of vinegar at four times the price. The hard part for a flat-dwelling reader is figuring out which bottles deliver and which are mostly packaging.

The four cleaners you actually need
You can clean almost any flat with four cleaners. Adding more rarely adds capability; it usually adds bottles and storage.

That is the baseline. Anything else (oven cleaner, drain unblocker, glass cleaner) can be either made for less than a pound or done with the four above plus some elbow grease.
The case for refillables
The biggest single packaging win in the cleaning cabinet is to switch from bottle-of-the-week disposables to one durable spray bottle refilled from a concentrate. The math is striking: one bottle, refilled with concentrate every six weeks, can replace roughly eight virgin plastic bottles a year per cleaner. Across four cleaners, that is thirty-plus bottles eliminated.
Refill stations are now in many cities, but you do not need one. Concentrate cartridges that mix with tap water at home are widely available by post. The format trades a small amount of inconvenience (decanting and mixing) for a large reduction in packaging.
What we make at home
Some homemade cleaners are genuine wins. Others are internet fantasy.
Worth making. A simple glass cleaner is half white vinegar, half water, in a labelled spray bottle. It cleans windows and mirrors better than any commercial spray we have tested. A scouring paste is two parts baking soda to one part dish soap, mixed in a small jar, applied with a sponge to grimy bathtubs and oven racks. Not worth making. Homemade laundry detergent. The recipes online either use ineffective ingredients (grated bar soap that re-deposits on fabrics) or produce a product that voids modern washing-machine warranties. Buy a concentrated, well-formulated commercial detergent and refill the bottle.
Avoid mixing. Never combine vinegar with bleach (toxic chlorine gas), vinegar with hydrogen peroxide (peracetic acid), or any commercial cleaner with another commercial cleaner. The “all natural” label on a bottle does not change the chemistry; mixing is still risky.
Cloths matter more than cleaners
One of the quiet truths of green cleaning is that the cloth does most of the work. A high-quality microfibre cloth, used dry, can remove dust and fingerprints from glass without any cleaner at all. A flat-weave cotton bar mop scrubs counters more effectively than a paper towel.
Build a small rotation of six cloths. Two microfibre for glass and dusting. Two cotton bar mops for surfaces and floors. Two waffle-weave for the bathroom. Wash them together once a week with the bath towels. That single rotation can eliminate roughly a roll of paper towels per fortnight and dramatically improve the result.
The kitchen sink question
Washing dishes by hand is often more sustainable than running a dishwasher half-full, but it is less sustainable than running a modern, well-stacked dishwasher full. The variable is fullness, not appliance.
For flats with a dishwasher: run it only when full, on the eco cycle, with a plant-based tab. The eco cycle uses more time and less water and electricity than the standard cycle. For flats with no dishwasher: stack the day’s dishes in the sink, run a single bowl of hot water with a few drops of soap, and wash everything in one batch rather than under a running tap. Single-batch washing roughly halves water use.

Smell, honestly
Many readers worry that switching to plant-based cleaners means the flat will not smell “clean”, that fresh-lemon-bleach smell of a freshly turned hotel room. The first two weeks of switching can feel that way. The fix is small drops of essential oil (lemon, rosemary, eucalyptus) added to the surface cleaner, or a small dish of baking soda left at the back of the fridge to absorb odours.
After a month, most households recalibrate. The flat smells of clean linen, fresh air, and whatever was cooked last. That is genuinely how a clean flat smells; the chemical “clean” smell was always a marketing artefact.

The single annual sweep
Once a year, ideally at the change of seasons, do a full audit of the cleaning cabinet. Anything not used in twelve months is removed. Bottles are decanted, labelled, and combined where possible. The list of cleaners you actually use is written on the inside of the cabinet door. Next year you will refill, not rebuy.

It is easy to feel that individual sustainability is a small thing in a world of large emissions. The honest framing is that individual practice and structural change reinforce each other rather than competing. When you cycle to work, the count of cyclists in your neighbourhood goes up, which influences local council decisions about cycling infrastructure, which makes cycling easier for the next person who considers it. When you switch to a renewable energy tariff, the market for renewable generation grows, which lowers the cost of new installations and accelerates the energy transition.
These mechanisms are slow and partially invisible from inside any single household. They are also genuinely operative. The cities and countries that have moved fastest on climate are the ones where significant numbers of individuals made early shifts in behaviour, which gave political cover to elected officials who then enacted broader structural changes. Your individual choices are not the whole story, but they are the part of the story you actually control.
