Reducing the Shipping Impact of Your City Life (Without Quitting Online Shopping)

Couriers are part of city life now. Here is how to use online shopping in a way that quietly cuts your delivery footprint, without giving it up entirely.

Couriers are everywhere in cities. Walk down most central streets and you will pass two delivery vans, three e-bike riders, and an Amazon driver looking for a doorbell. The convenience is real; the carbon cost is also real, but it is more nuanced than the “shopping locally is always better” story.

The realistic position is that online shopping is here to stay. The interesting question is how to do it in a way that is roughly carbon-neutral with a thoughtful local shop, rather than dramatically worse.

The single biggest lever: consolidation

The carbon cost of a single delivery is largely about the van that delivers it, not the product inside it. A van running a planned route with 80 stops emits roughly the same carbon per delivery as a passenger walking to a local shop. A van running a one-stop, express-delivery route emits dramatically more per package.

The implication: consolidate orders ruthlessly. Wait until you need three or four items from the same retailer before placing the order. Use the longest available delivery window (standard, three-to-five days) rather than next-day or same-day. Choose “ship together” or “delay non-urgent items” options when retailers offer them.

A single Amazon order of five items has roughly a fifth of the per-item carbon footprint of five separate orders. The convenience cost is trivial; the impact cost is large.

The myth of fast shipping

Next-day and same-day delivery break the consolidation logic above. They force vans to run partial routes on tight schedules, often with low load factors, just to meet the time window. Per-package emissions for same-day delivery are roughly three to five times those of standard shipping.

The practical move is to default to standard shipping for everything. Reserve fast shipping for genuine emergencies, a missing-part-for-tomorrow situation, a medication, a gift you forgot. When given a choice between “delivery tomorrow” and “delivery in four days but no extra van,” choose the latter.

Returns are not free

The carbon footprint of online shopping doubles or triples for items that are returned. A returned item travels the original delivery route, then a return route, often to be sorted, restocked or sometimes destroyed (clothing returns to fast-fashion retailers often go straight to landfill).

The most useful intervention is to buy fewer items more carefully. Read the reviews. Check the sizing chart. If buying clothing, buy one size rather than three to try. The “order three sizes, return two” habit has roughly the carbon footprint of three new purchases.

Packaging, the visible cost

The packaging waste from online shopping is the most visible part of the footprint, even if it is not the largest. A small intervention: when a retailer offers minimum-packaging or “ship in own packaging” options, take them. Some platforms now let you request that small items be shipped without the box; the order arrives in just a sealed mailer or directly in the manufacturer’s carton.

For cardboard, the main streams are recycling and reuse. Flatten boxes for kerbside collection. Save a small stack of strong boxes for moving day, return trips, or sending parcels. Most cities now have free e-commerce return drop-off points; using one rather than home pickup avoids an extra van trip.

The local shop is not automatically better

“Buy local” is often presented as an unambiguous sustainability win. It is more complicated. A local shop you drive to has a higher carbon cost per item than a walking trip to the same shop or a consolidated delivery. A local shop selling air-freighted goods has a higher footprint than a delivery of European-grown alternatives. The sustainability win of local shopping mostly comes from walking or cycling to it, not from the existence of the shop itself.

The honest hierarchy looks like: walk or cycle to a local independent shop > take public transit to a shop > consolidated online delivery > driving to a shop > express-delivery online order.

Choose where you spend, deliberately

The other side of online shopping is who you give your money to. Smaller, independent retailers often have lower environmental impact per item than mega-retailers, partly because of how they pack and partly because of how their supply chains are structured. Many of them now offer delivery directly to your city via standard postal services.

If half your weekly online spending shifts from a global e-commerce giant to small independent retailers in your country, the per-item carbon impact can drop measurably without changing what you buy. The convenience trade-off is usually marginal, most independent retailers ship in three to five days, which is the right window for non-urgent purchases anyway.

The freezer trick for groceries

Online grocery delivery is one of the higher-impact e-commerce categories, but it can be net-positive if structured well. A single large weekly delivery from a supermarket to a city flat has lower carbon than walking-distance daily shopping in many cases, because the van is consolidating dozens of orders.

The trick is to lean into the consolidation. Order weekly, not three times a week. Stock the freezer with a buffer (frozen vegetables, frozen fish, a loaf of bread) so the weekly shop covers the staples and you do not need top-ups. The flat smells like whatever was cooked, not like a perfumed lobby. The energy bill is lower than the neighbourhood average but the household still has a TV, a kettle, and a freezer.

What is different is the defaults. The reusable bag is genuinely in the everyday bag. The thermostat is genuinely scheduled. The food in the fridge is genuinely used before being wasted. The shopping is genuinely planned rather than improvised. None of this requires the household to think harder about sustainability than the average household; it requires the defaults to have been set once and then left alone. The mental load of good practice is, in the long run, significantly lower than the mental load of constantly negotiating with disposable habits.
