A plain note about the affiliate relationships behind some of our product links.
UrbanEthica participates in a small number of affiliate programs. This page explains what that means in practice.
What is an affiliate link?
An affiliate link is a special URL that tells a retailer “this visitor came from UrbanEthica.” If you click through and buy something within the retailer’s tracking window, the retailer pays us a small commission. The price you pay is identical, you are not charged extra and you do not lose anything by clicking an affiliate link instead of a regular one.
Where you’ll see them
Affiliate links appear inside some product round-ups, product reviews, and gear recommendations. They are most common in our Smart Energy & Water Use and Sustainable City Living streams, because those readers most often want to know which thing to buy.
Programs we participate in
- Amazon Associates, for widely available consumer goods (kettles, drying racks, reusable bottles).
- Direct retailer programs, a handful of independent eco-retailers we have used personally and trust.
- Service comparison platforms, for energy switching tools and city-bike subscriptions, where the comparison itself is free to the reader.
How affiliate income changes our writing
It doesn’t. Recommendations are decided in the editorial planning meeting before any commerce team looks at margins. If our best pick is not sold by an affiliate partner, we still recommend it and skip the link. If an affiliate partner sells a poor product, we still write a critical review.
Sponsored content
Affiliate links are not the same as sponsored content. We do not currently publish sponsored articles. If that ever changes, sponsored posts will be labelled “Sponsored” at the top of the article and in the URL, and will be separated from regular editorial content in our archives.
